Why BTS Donated $1 Million to Black Lives Matter

In a new interview, BTS reflect on how supporting the Black Lives Matter movement hit close to home. On June 6, BTS and their record label Big Hit Entertainment donated a whopping $1 million to the Black Lives Matter organization. Approximately 24 hours later, the ARMY matched their $1 million donation on top of their work taking over racist hashtags and derailing President Donald Trump’s Tulsa rally on June 20 by signing up for the free tickets and never showing up.
“When we’re abroad or in other situations, we’ve also been subjected to prejudice. We feel that prejudice should not be tolerated; it really has no place,” Jin told Variety. “We started to discuss what we could do to help, whether it was a donation or something else. That’s where the conversation began — just trying to see what we could do to try to alleviate this prejudice.”
Suga denied describing the group as political and said their initiatives simply aligned with “any person who wishes to live in a just world.” Piggybacking off of his response, J-Hope said BTS wants to continue harnessing their musical and charitable influence to make the world a better place.
“I think it’s very simple really. It’s about us being against racism and violence,” Suga continued. “Most people would be against these things. We have experienced prejudice as well ourselves. We just want to voice the fact that we feel it’s the right of everyone to not be subject to racism or violence.”
