At least 15 people have drowned when a boat carrying Rohingya refugees sank off the south coast of Bangladesh, officials say. The boat was destined for Malaysia and included Rohingya refugees from camps in Bangladesh, local authorities told the BBC. All of the dead bodies recovered are reportedly of women and children. An official told the AFP news agency that 70 people were rescued. Many are still missing. The boat capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Saint Martin\'s island. In August 2017, a deadly crackdown by Myanmar\'s army on Rohingya Muslims sent hundreds of thousands fleeing across the border into Bangladesh. Most have been placed in refugee camps and some have tried to flee in boats to Malaysia. At least 300 people started for Malaysia on two trawlers from Monakhali area around 8:00pm yesterday, said Lt Commander M Hamidul Islam, media officer of Coast Guard. After few hours, one of the trawlers capsized in the Bay, he said. The other trawler has not been located yet. “The death toll may rise further,” he added. Three units of Coast Guard, Border Guard Bangladesh, Navy and St Martin’s Boat Owners’ Association have been conducting the rescue operation jointly. All the bodies have been sent to Shah Parir Dwip in Teknaf around 10:30am, Office-in-Charge of local police station Pradip Kumar Das told The Daily Star.
