People Think Treatment Of Yankees ‘Goomba Grabbers’ Vs. Steve Bartman Shows How Much Our Society Has Devolved
The instance of fan interference between New York Yankees fans and Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts in Game 4 of the 2024 World Series has sparked a larger debate about the state of society.
Given the incident’s similarities to the infamous moment involving Chicago Cubs fan Steve Bartman during Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship Series between the Cubs and Florida Marlins, comparisons between the two were instantly made.
One common talking point among sports fans seems to be the difference in the treatment between the Yankees “Goomba Grabbers” — as they were deemed by Boomer Esiason’s radio show on WFAN — and Bartman, and what that reaction means for our society as a whole, particularly its degradation.

“Not hyperbole, this is a microcosm of how far we’ve fallen as a society. Bartman made an innocent mistake & had to retreat forever. These guys made a deliberate attempt at assault & will probably be millionaires by next month,” one viral response to the incident said.
“Steve Bartman’s life was ruined over something far less egregious than what those Yankee fans did and those dregs of society are being treated like heroes. I feel like this is another manifestation of society being cooked and antisocial behavior just being acceptable now,” said a tweet with over 1 million views.
“Steve Bartman hasn’t been able to appear in public in over 20 years and we have ESPN reporters calling this dips— a ‘beaut,'” one baseball fan raged.
“Steve Bartman hasn’t made a public appearance since 2003 yet this troglodyte probably gonna try and use this to start his own podcast,” added another.
The assumption from fans that the Goomba Grabbers — identified as Yankees season ticket holder Austin Capobianco and John Peter — would attempt to parlay their 15 minutes of fame was certainly accurate: within 24 hours of the incident, the pair were already doing the media rounds as they gave an interview with ESPN and popped up at the Barstool Sports offices to make some eye-numbingly brutal content.
Despite getting an 11-4 win in Game 4 with perhaps a little added juju from the Goomba Grabbers, the Yankees imploded in Game 5, surrendering a 5-0 lead to ultimately lose the game 7-6. and the series 4-1.
