Black USWNT Star Calls Out NWSL Player For Unknowingly Singing A Slave Hymn

United States Women’s National Team star Midge Purce had an awkward interaction recently with fellow NWSL player Nikki Stanton when Stanton accidentally sang an old slave hymn in her direction.
The moment was shown in an episode of “The Offseason,” a docuseries streamed entirely on X which follows the lives of 11 NWSL players who spent the 2024 offseason training together in Miami

NWSL Star Nikki Stanton Accidentally Sings Slave Hymn To USWNT’s Midge Purce
Purce, who has 30 career appearances for the USWNT, and Stanton found themselves trapped in an elevator together at the massive mansion they were staying in.
During the encounter, Stanton begins to sing “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen,” a famous black spiritual that traces its roots back to slavery in the United States.
Legendary black musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Sam Cooke have since made the song famous.
But Purce was in awe, and Stanton was shocked to learn the song’s origins.
In the scene, Purce cocks her head in both confusion and seeming amazement before Stanton says “Do you know that song?”
Purce replies, “It’s a slave hymn!”
At that point, Stanton’s jaw hit the floor in an almost comical fashion.
Purce cracks up laughing before Stanton can reply “Miiidddgee, I didn’t know!”
Purce asks Stanton how she the knew the song. But Stanton wasn’t sure.
“I’m pretty sure it was in a childhood…,” Stanton begin, stammering to find an answer before a joking Purce says “A childhood video?!”
Now, to Stanton’s credit, she makes a good point.
The song was featured in “The Lion King” when one of the characters, Zazu, is being held captive by Scar. It also appeared in the show “Recess” on Disney Channel and in the move “Space Balls.”
So there are plenty of ways she could have been exposed to it.
But it’s still an absolutely hilarious interaction.
Purce did a fantastic job of educating Stanton while also taking it all in stride. It was obvious Stanton did not have any ill intent. And the moment as a whole was nothing short of hilarious.
