Now-Fired Houston Football Coach Dana Holgorsen’s Old Comments Come Back To Bite Him
Houston football coach Dana Holgorsen sure didn’t expect to get fired this year, based on comments he has made in the past twelve months. But, that wasn’t the case, as Holgorsen was fired on Sunday following a 4-8 season, and his old comments are coming back to bite him.
It wasn’t just Holgorsen that was surprised about his firing. Many college football fans figured that the coach, who went 12-2 just two seasons ago, would be safe for at least another season.
But, Houston moved to fire the former West Virginia head coach on Sunday. It’s an understandable move.
Obviously a 4-8 season isn’t good. Yes, they moved to a tougher conference this year, the Big 12, as opposed to the AAC. But, they had a schedule that set up favorably to at least make a bowl game, and they couldn’t do it.
The biggest concern in terms of bringing Holgorsen back had to have been his recruiting. The Cougars are currently ranked 102nd in the 247Sports class rankings. That is very, very, bad, and they don’t have a single four-star recruit. Again, this isn’t Wyoming, with no local talent. This is Houston, with as much local talent as any location in America. Even the second and third tier recruits out of the Houston area would put Houston among the most-talented teams in the Big 12 moving forward, as Texas and Oklahoma move to the SEC.
It is funny, though, that Holgorsen was so confident his job was safe this year. Take a look at this comment from this Spring.
Holgorsen to @skhanjr this past spring: “I have five years on my contract with a f—ing impossible buyout…So there ain’t no f—ing hot seat in my mind. There just ain’t.”

Yikes. That’s not good, Dana. He will get to enjoy a buyout that’s reportedly around $15 million.
