Deion Sanders is already solidifying the vision for his new program, the Colorado Buffaloes. After accepting the head coaching role over the weekend, Sanders took to the stage for his opening press conference Sunday afternoon.

Coach Prime took the role following a trio of seasons at HBCU Jackson State. With the Tigers, he went 27-5, twice running through his conference schedule with a perfect 8-0 mark. After going 11-2 in 2021, JSU posted an undefeated 12-0 record this past year.

That success landed Sanders a ton of attention on the head coaching market as he’s been tied to openings like South Florida, Cincinnati, and Colorado this year. He also interviewed with TCU last offseason.

The Buffaloes apparently offered Sanders the best opportunity and he jumped at the chance to coach in the PAC 12. Now, he’ll take over a program in Boulder that went just 1-11 this past season. Overall, Colorado has posted 15 losing seasons in their last 17 campaigns.

Sanders is hoping to change that trajectory, and his son Shedeur will play a large part in that turnaround.

On Sunday, Deion announced the Shedeur Sanders will be the Buffaloes’ starting quarterback in 2023. Here’s what he had to say in his introductory conference.

“Where’s Shedeur? This is your quarterback. He’s gonna have to earn it, though.”

And he’s certainly capable.

This past year, Shedeur Sanders threw for more than 3,400 yards while adding another 175 yards on the ground. The signal caller tossed 36 touchdowns to just six picks while completing 70% of his passes.

Sanders’ competition will take a step up in the PAC 12, but that’s not to say Shedeur won’t be successful. In fact, his father insisted that he should be a part of the Heisman conversation earlier this year. He’s obviously not worried about how his talent will translate to the next level.

While Sanders could prove capable, many on social media are crying nepotism. They called out the new head coach for already naming his son the starter before being on campus 24 hours.

One fan said, “Nothing wins a team over more than saying the coach’s son is the starting QB before you hold your first practice.” Another wrote, “What a joke, he might as well tell everyone currently on the team to pack their bags.”

The task will be tall in turning around an offense that ranked 127th in the nation in scoring. Sanders and Co. will have their work cut out for them in Boulder next year.
