Knicks, Jazz Reached Breaking Point On Protections Over Third First Round Pick

When the New York Knicks and Utah Jazz reached an impasse in their trade negotiations on a Donovan Mitchell deal, the Cleveland Cavaliers reached back out after breaking off talks last Friday.

The Jazz preferred New York's collection of assets and appeared to be moving closer to a trade on Sunday night and into Monday. But the Knicks balked at including Quentin Grimes into a trade that also included RJ Barrett to acquire Mitchell. The Knicks proposed including Immanuel Quickly as a replacement for Grimes, but Utah wanted three unprotected first round picks, but New York would only do a third first round pick that included Top 5 protections.

Those packages would have included two second-round picks, two pick swaps and two expiring contracts from a third team. The Knicks would have moved out Evan Fournier and a first round pick to a third team.

The Knicks planned to continue their pursuit of Mitchell, but the Jazz pivoted to discussions with Cleveland and never again engaged the Knicks.

Mitchell had been enthusiastic over the prospect of playing for the Knicks.
