Kendrick Lamar Dominates Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums With Triple-Play Chart Feat

Kendrick Lamar achieves a feat unseen on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in more than a decade, with three of his albums in the top 10 in the same week. The trio, on the chart dated May 28, marks the first triple play by any act since E-40 in April 2012.

Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers leads the crew with its No. 1 entrance and 295,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending May 19, according to Luminate. His 2012 full-length debut, good kid m.A.A.d. city, slides 7-8 (22,000 units, up 9% compared with the prior week) and 2017’s DAMN. ascends 13-10 (20,000 units, up 15%).

As mentioned, the last artist to post three top 10s on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums in the same week was E-40 on the list dated April 14, 2012. That week, three installments of a trilogy project all debuted: the combined The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 1, 2 & 3 (No. 8), The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 2 (No. 9) and The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 1 (No. 10). (The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 3, meanwhile, debuted at No. 13.)

Overall, Lamar is the sixth act with three simultaneous top 10s since the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart began in 1965. The Temptations hold the record, with four concurrent albums in three different weeks in 1969. In addition, Sam Cooke managed the three-at-once feat in 1965, as did Lou Rawls in 1967 and The Supremes in 1969.

Here’s a recap of the artists and albums involved in accomplishing the feat. Albums are listed in rank order for their first week, though the positions may have changed in subsequent weeks.
