Pittsburgh’s Jordan Addison was named college football’s most outstanding wide receiver in 2021. Now he is considering transferring and has set off a chaotic chain reaction.

Addison, a unanimous All-American last season, will have two years of eligibility remaining should he choose to use them both. His value on a roster is invaluable and, although he has yet to appear in the transfer portal, multiple reports believe that he is on his way out.

Among the schools that are considered to be in the mix, USC is the heavy front-runner.

Addison is from Fredrick, Maryland, which is not far from where the Trojans’ star quarterback Caleb Williams grew up. The DMV ties could help USC bring Addison to Los Angeles.

Additionally, according to reports, as could money. In the current era of NIL, Addison reportedly has his eyes on a big financial compensation package with a group that is associated with USC.

Should Addison choose to transfer, if he wants to be eligible for the upcoming season without requiring a waiver, he would have to enter the portal prior to the May 1st deadline. At this point, it is less of an “if” than a “when.”

Once Addison is in the portal, the Trojans are atop the list. However, after rumors started to swirl about him leaving the Panthers, other schools have also entered the conversation.

Wherever Jordan Addison ends up, if he decides to transfer out of Pittsburgh, enroll at a new school, and then sign a massive deal for NIL, it would be groundbreaking for the space.

As things currently stand, there have been instances of recruits or transfers committing to a new school for its NIL potential, but those deals and conversations have been kept mostly under wraps. With Addison, the decision is being made somewhat in the public eye after the media started to report about what could be to come.

Addison would be one of, if not the best player to enter the transfer portal since NIL became legal in July. For his recruitment to be made a national story, and include the financial component is a huge deal and it raises a lot of questions.

The biggest question, of course, is around tampering. Did the Trojans get in contact with Addison before he decided to transfer? Did they float him the idea of big money to be made?

According to ESPN, Pat Narduzzi and Pittsburgh certainly thinks so. After the news started to surface, Narduzzi reportedly called Lincoln Riley multiple times on Friday night to voice his displeasure.

Addison caught 100 passes for 1,593 yards and 17 touchdowns a year ago. However, in 2022, Pittsburgh will have a new quarterback (presumably Kedon Slovis), a new offensive coordinator and a new wide receivers coach.

His decision to transfer may not be about money. But, whether it is or is not, Addison entering the portal would be a fascinating case study on the market value of a Biletnikoff award winner on the open market.

Since Riley’s hire, USC has taken 15 transfers. He has said publicly that his roster expects to see dramatic turnover between the Trojans’ spring game and the start of the 2022 season.

Addison could be part of that change. He could also choose to go elsewhere or stay at Pittsburgh.

If Addison does leave, there is a real possibility of litigious fallout. He has until Sunday to decide.
