Pelicans Looking To Buy At Trade Deadline; CJ McCollum, De'Aaron Fox, Kevin Huerter Potential Targets
The New Orleans Pelicans have played without Zion Williamson all season and are currently outside the play-in, but they appear to be heading into the trade deadline aggressively looking to improve their chances of competing for a spot.
"The Pelicans, from the folks I'm talking to, even though Zion is unsure [to return] and there's eerie quiet here... They're pretty active looking to buy.
"Wow," replied Tim MacMahon.
"Even though they're outside the top-10 right now," added Windhorst. "Maybe they won't be able to buy. It won't be for a lack of trying. From what I understand, they have this whole portfolio of draft picks, including the top-10 protected Lakers' pick. They could trade it and a team could take it and if it's in the top-10 they get it and if it's outside the top-10, it still goes to Memphis. They could trade that part of the pick."
The Pelicans have one of the deepest collections of future traded picks from the Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday deals.
"From what I understand, they have talked to the Blazers about CJ McCollum," said Windhorst. "They have talked to the Kings about De'Aaron Fox. They have talked to the Rockets about Eric Gordon. They have talked to the Hawks about Kevin Huerter. Probably more that I don't know about. Obviously the offers for these players wouldn't be the same. But the Pelicans are buying."
