Acquiring James Harden Was Major Reason Why 76ers Hired Daryl Morey
The Philadelphia 76ers hired Daryl Morey in November 2020 in part to eventually acquire James Harden, according to sources that spoke with Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Co-owner Michael Rubin wanted to bring Harden to the 76ers. Rubin is known to have a close relationship with Harden. Harden and his camp have maintained a close relationship with Morey. The 76ers also hired former Houston Rockets CEO Tad Brown.
When Harden sought a trade from the Rockets at the beginning of the 20-21 season, Morey tried to trade him for him. While Harden was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in January 2021, the 76ers successfully acquired him 13 months later.
The 76ers retained their clearest trade asset for a Harden trade, Ben Simmons, in what was an uncomfortable seven months for all parties.
