Adult Male With Omicron Variant Attended New York Anime Convention
During a White House press briefing, press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that a vaccinated adult male infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 attended an anime convention in New York City’s Javits Center.
Anime NYC took place two weeks ago, and required both face coverings and at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to attend. While briefing reporters this morning, Psaki told them that a man from Minnesota attended the convention and contracted the Omicron variant there before returning to Minnesota. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the person was advised to isolate from others, and Minnesota epidemiologists continue to investigate the case in collaboration with New York City and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Minnesota Department of Health said it detected the Omicron case earlier today in a press release.
“This news is concerning, but it is not a surprise,” Gov. Tim Walz said in the press release. “We know that this virus is highly infectious and moves quickly throughout the world. Minnesotans know what to do to keep each other safe now—get the vaccine, get tested, wear a mask indoors, and get a booster. Together, we can fight this virus and help keep Minnesotans safe.”
When the Omicron variant was first discovered in South Africa, President Joe Biden issued a travel ban to countries in the region. Yesterday, the first case of the Omicron variant was detected in California.
