Dave Chappelle’s former Washington D.C. high school, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, is delaying a fundraiser event that Chappelle was set to host due to potential backlash from students. While the school had initially planned to cancel the event entirely, they’ve since pivoted and announced it would instead be held on April 22, obviously hoping the fervor surrounding the legendary stand-up comedian would cool down by then.
According to reports, the money raised would have been put toward a new theater named after Chappelle.
“We recognize that not everyone will accept or welcome a particular artist’s point of view, product or craft, but reject the notion that a ‘cancel culture’ is a healthy or constructive means to teach our students how society should balance creative freedom with protecting the right and dignity of all of its members,” the Duke Ellington School of the Arts said in a statement to Politico.
The potential walkout is just the latest in a series of protests against Chappelle, who stirred up controversy with his LGBTQ jokes in his latest Netflix special The Closer, which hit the streamer on October 5. In the weeks following the release of The Closer, Netflix employees also staged a walkout, with some calling on the streaming giant to remove the special from the platform.
In the aftermath, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has largely stood by Chappelle and his right to “artistic freedom” despite protests from employees and has rebuked calls to take The Closer off Netflix.
