Something is going on with Zebras this year. Not only did one have to be tased in Tennessee back in the spring, but five zebras remain on the loose after a month in Maryland.

And they are not alone.

Earlier this week, two zebras had the people of Pinegree Grove, Illinois thinking that they were hallucinating. They were not.

Around 5:21 p.m. on Sunday, Kane County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to Route 47 for a report of animals in the roadway.

The zebras — a young male and female — had mysteriously escaped from a pen in a zoo at the Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard. They quietly snuck out of the rear doors and took off.

Customers near the pumpkin patch were the first to spot the loose zebras and quickly notified workers. At that point, the chase was on.

Because the escape took place near I-90, Illinois State Police were called second. And then both Hampshire and Pinegree Grove police joined in.

With four police units and the farm workers in hot pursuit, it became a race against both traffic and the clock. Police blocked multiple roads in the area several times and with dusk falling, pursuers turned worried that they would not be able to see the zebras among the cornstalks.

Those zebras can MOVE!

Eventually, after nearly two hours of tracking primarily on ATVs, one zebra was caught near the road and the other was corralled in a fenced-in pasture.

Even for local police, who have dealt with loose animals before, found it to be a new challenge.

“We’re used to (loose) cows, horses, all kinds of livestock. We’ve had emus — emus! — over the years, because there is an emu farm up that way,” Kane County Undersheriff Pat Gengler said to the Daily Herald. But zebras were a first. “How do we catch zebras? They didn’t teach us that at the (police) academy.”

As for the pumpkin patch employees, it was a rush.

“It was pretty exciting for a while,” Jacob Goebbert said. “It was all hands on deck.”

The farm is still investigating how the zebras got out and, fortunately, they were uninjured.
