Coldplay’s ‘Music of the Spheres’ Makes Fast Start In U.K. Chart Race
Coldplay should keep their U.K. chart streak alive with Music of the Spheres (Parlophone), which surges into the lead on the midweek survey.
Music of the Spheres is already the fastest-seller of the year. The album shifts more than 81,000 units over the weekend, the OCC reports, besting Dave’s previous 2021 best, We’re All Alone In This Together, which amassed 74,000 chart sales in its opening week back in July.
Spheres is on track to become the first album to notch more than 100,000 chart sales in a week since Ed Sheeran’s No. 6 Collaborations project shifted 125,000 in July 2019, more than two years ago.
Coldplay is on a streak of eight-for-eight albums chart crowns, dating back to 2000’s Parachutes.
Music of the Spheres, the followup to 2019’s Everyday Life, which notched almost 81,000 combined units in its first week, should give Chris Martin and Co. a ninth leader.
Coldplay’s latest leads an all-new top six, as the Super Deluxe Edition reworking of The Beatles’ final album Let It Be (Apple Corps) lands at No. 2 on the midweek chart.
The classic 1970 album is supercharged by the release of the official trailer to Peter Jackson’s Get Back, a three-part documentary which captures the making of Let It Be. Beatlemaniacs will need a Disney+ subscription to watch the series, which starts Nov. 25.
If all goes to plan, Irish crooner Daniel O’Donnell will celebrate 60 (DMG TV) with his 19th Top 10. His latest collection is at No. 3 on the Official Chart Update. O’Donnell actually turns 60 on Dec. 12.
Meanwhile, indie legends The Charlatans’ bow at No. 4 with their career retrospective A Head Full of Ideas (Then); London singer and songwriter Joy Crookes blasts in at No. 5 with Skin (Insanity); and Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes slither into the midweek chart at No. 6 with Sticky (International Death Cult).
Finally, as the release of Adele’s fourth album 30 (XL Recordings) draws closer, fans are returning in droves to the singer’s catalog. Adele’s most recent release 25 holds at No. 7; 21 lifts 14-10; and 19 races 54-14.
