GM: Preserving Cap Space For Next Great Free Agent Will Get You Fired

In a piece on ESPN, Bobby Marks details how changes to the NBA's extension rules have created a situation where very few star players are set to become free agents in the near future.

One byproduct of that environment will be fewer teams planning to build through cap space in free agency.

"You are naive to think that the best way to build your roster is through free agency and not the draft and trades," one Western Conference GM told ESPN. "Preserving cap space and waiting for that next great player to become available will get you fired."

Of the 33 players who made the All-Star team in 2020 or 2021, just five of them -- LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard and Julius Randle -- joined the team they represented at All-Star Weekend via free agency.

The Knicks created cap space in hopes of signing Kevin Durant in 2019, but he signed with the Brooklyn Nets and they then pivoted to Randle and a number of lower rung free agents. Even though Randle's tenure with the Knicks has become hugely successful, the franchise parted ways with Steve Mills early in 2020.
