Beyoncé Really Ran Into Selena Quintanilla At a Mall, and Fans Are Blown Away by Scene in Netflix Series
#Music
Selena: The Series about the late singer Selena Quintanilla released its second season on Netflix Tuesday (May 4), and it features a depiction of her very real run-in with another world-famous pop star: Beyoncé.
The sixth episode, titled “Lo más bello” (which translates from Spanish to “the most beautiful”), features a scene in which a young Beyoncé, her sister Solange and their mother Tina are leaving The Galleria mall in Houston, Texas. A very starstruck Beyoncé spots Selena with her sister Suzette and mother Marcella, and works up the courage to say hello to her. “Beyoncé Knowles, you better learn not to be afraid of people if you ever wanna be famous, too,” the actress portraying Tina tells her.
We all know how that story has been playing out, but little do people know that Queen Bey’s encounter with the “Queen of Tejano music” actually happened. In an old interview with MTV Tr3s, the Texas-bred superstar talked about what it was like to run into the superstar from the Lone Star State.
“I did actually meet Selena in The Galleria mall in Houston, but I didn’t say much to Selena because I wasn’t a celebrity and I just saw her and said, ‘Hello’ and kept it moving,” she said at the time. “Definitely growing up in Texas, I heard her on the radio and I think listening to her album, even though I didn’t know exactly what she was singing, it helped me in the studio with my pronunciation. … I think she is a legend and I admire her. And she was so talented, so I’m very happy that even though she didn’t know who I was, I’m still so excited that I got that opportunity.”
Christian Serratos, the actress who plays Selena, was excited that the scene was included. “I thought it was so cool, I thought it was so cute,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “And I thought, ‘You know, that’s what this story is about, is inspiration, and inspiring young people to follow their dreams, whatever those dreams are.'”
Added Serratos: “I always make jokes … is this going to be my connection to meeting Beyoncé?”
And fans are equally (if not more) excited to learn about this story, while voicing how they would’ve portrayed the star-studded moment. Take a look at some of their reactions below:

Adding the moment Beyoncé and Selena crossed paths in the series was cute. A lot of folks don’t understand the influence Selena had on us Texans. Spanish speaking or not. We loved her. #selenanetflix pic.twitter.com/PEVcQLDNQ2

Y’all…Selena and Beyoncé did actually meet at the mall. That part is true. It just wasn’t as corny as the series portrayed it to be. pic.twitter.com/08aHjythx0

I would have shot this from Selena’s POV with Solange, Beyoncé and Tina passing Selena after speaking and Tina saying “Beyoncé who was that?” And then Beyoncé saying “Mama, that’s Selena!”
All while Selena looked over her shoulder blushing before moving on.
