Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’ Continues Record Reign With 8th Week Atop Global Charts

Olivia Rodrigo claims the biggest song in the world for a eighth week, as “Drivers License” holds at No. 1 in its eighth frame on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts.
The song extends its record for the most time spent atop the Global 200 and ties for the longest rule so far on the Global Excl. U.S. chart.
Plus, Masked Wolf’s breakthrough hit “Astronaut in the Ocean” reaches the top 10 of both surveys.
Billboard’s two global charts (the latest of which are dated March 13) began with the lists dated Sept. 19, 2020, and rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by MRC Data. The Billboard Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the U.S.
Chart rankings are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.
‘License’ Doubles Up on Longest Global 200 Rule
Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” tops the Billboard Global 200 for an eighth week, with 58.3 million streams, the week’s top streaming sum (down 8%), and 15,000 sold (down 26%) worldwide in the Feb. 26-March 4 tracking week.
The single by the singer-songwriter and actress, initially known for her roles in Disney Channel’s Bizaardvark and Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, extends its mark for the longest Global 200 dominance so far, doubling the four-week commands of two runners-up, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (December-January) and BTS’ “Dynamite” (October-January).
The rest of the Global 200’s top five holds in place: The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears” holds at its No. 2 high, while his “Blinding Lights” keeps at No. 3, after reaching No. 2; Lil Tjay’s “Calling My Phone,” featuring 6LACK, is steady at No. 4, after it debuted at its No. 2 best; and Cardi B’s “Up” repeats at No. 5, after it launched at its No. 4 high.
Elsewhere in the Global 200’s top 10, Masked Wolf’s “Astronaut in the Ocean” rockets to the region, surging 17-10. The hit from the Australian rapper, born Harry Michael, drew 32.8 million streams (up 12%) and 12,000 sold (up 20%) globally in the tracking week.
The song, which has also benefited from its notable TikTok presence, simultaneously jumps 13-10 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart with 24 million streams (up 8%) and 4,000 sold (up 22%) in territories outside the U.S.
‘Wellerman’ Charts Course to Global Excl. U.S. Top 10
Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” concurrently leads the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for an eighth week, with 39.8 million streams (down 8%) and 6,000 sold (down 17%) in territories outside the U.S. in the Feb. 26-March 4 tracking week.
The song ties for the longest lead yet on the Global Excl. U.S. chart, matching the eight-week reign of BTS’ “Dynamite,” logged nonconsecutively in September-January.
The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears” holds at its No. 2 Global 200 Excl. U.S. high and his “Blinding Lights” stays at No. 3, after reaching No. 2, while BTS’ “Dynamite” is steady at No. 4.
Rounding out the Global Excl. U.S. chart’s top five, Nathan Evans’ “Wellerman” reaches the tier (9-5), as the Scottish musician has ridden the recent wave of sea shanties on TikTok with his rendition of the New Zealand whaling song “Soon May the Wellerman Come” (whose origins date to the 1860s). His take drew 21.9 million streams (up 23%) and sold 13,000 (up 17%) outside the U.S. in the latest tracking week.
