Taylor Swift Has Her ‘Fingers Crossed’ After House of Representatives Passes Equality Act

Taylor Swift is celebrating a major step toward LGBTQ+ rights.
The House of Representatives voted 224-206 on Thursday (Feb. 25) to pass H.R. 5 and S. 788, better known as the Equality Act, which would create federal protections for LGBTQ Americans against discrimination on the basis of “sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity,” in areas including housing, employment, access to public accommodations (restaurants, bathrooms, etc.) and more.
The Senate would also have to vote to pass the bill in order for it to become law.

The superstar has been a longtime advocate for the Equality Act, releasing an open letter in May 2019 supporting the bills on her Instagram, and condemning former President Donald Trump’s stance on the issue. She also started a petition for the then-Republican leaning Senate to pass the Equality Act.
In her cameo-filled music video for “You Need to Calm Down,” Swift added an end card asking her fans to sign the petition, writing, “Let’s show our pride by demanding that, on a national level, our laws truly treat all of our citizens equally.”
