Jazmine Sullivan Honored Whitney Houston’s Iconic National Anthem Performance at 2021 Super Bowl Rehearsal
#Music
When Jazmine Sullivan strutted onto the field at Super Bowl LV on Sunday (February 7), she wowed the crowd with her incredible rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” with Eric Church.
What audiences didn’t see was, earlier in the day, Sullivan stood in that same spot and paid homage to the late Whitney Houston, and her iconic performance of the national anthem 30 years ago. During a dress rehearsal for the national anthem on Sunday, Sullivan appeared on the field with Church wearing a white sweatsuit, much like Houston did during her memorable performance.
In 1991, Houston performed “The Star Spangled Banner” before the start of Super Bowl XXV (also in Tampa, FL), wearing a red-white-and-blue sweatsuit. The singer belted her way through the notoriously difficult song at the height of her fame, and won over audience’s hearts everywhere — the performance has gone on to be considered one of the best performances of the national anthem to date.
