We’ve seen some pretty tragic gender reveal fails in the past few years, including a dad who caused $8 million in damages because he started a wildfire. Now a tragic story arises from what was supposed to be a festive baby shower.

Family members gathered for a backyard baby shower in Genesee County’s Gaines Township, Michigan, where they celebrated the welcoming of a new life by accidentally killing a guest in attendance. During the baby shower on Saturday, they thought it was a grand idea to fire a cannon. A projectile smashed into three parked cars and a garage that was as far as 25 feet away. The cannon’s shrapnel hit 26-year-old Evan Thomas Silva in the chest and killed him. He was standing approximately 10 to 15 feet away.

“(It was) similar to a signal cannon. The cast material exploded and sent projectiles in all directions,” Michigan State Police Lt. Liz Rich told the Detroit Free Press. “The homeowner reported it had been shot several times. If there aren’t regular inspections on a device like this, the cast material can wear away.”

“The cannon is designed to create a big flash, a loud noise and create smoke,” the state police said in a press release. “The cannon did not contain any projectiles, but it is suspected that the gun powder loaded into the device caused the cannon to fracture, resulting in shrapnel being spread in the area.”

Silva, a friend of the family, was taken to the Hurley Medical Center in Flint, where he sadly later died from his injuries.

Phil Sheridan, CEO of Sheridan Arms in Saginaw Township, told ABC12, “Simply loading the wrong type of gunpowder, loading too much gunpowder in there can take an open-ended cannon and turn it into a bomb.”

“He has left behind a loving family, countless friends and memories in all of our hearts,” his brother, Phil Silva said on Facebook on Sunday.

An investigation is ongoing.

“We will wait for the presentation of a complete investigation before making any determination,” said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.
