Selena Gomez on Honoring Her Latin Roots With ‘De Una Vez’: ‘It’s The Perfect Timing’

Selena Gomez finally dropped her highly-anticipated Spanish-language single “De Una Vez,” and she says it’s something she’s wanted to do for 10 years.
The track, produced by Tainy, Albert Hype, Jota Rosa, and Neon16, is a rhythmic pop tune with hints of urban music about healing from a previous relationship and discovering your self-worth. It also marks Gomez’s second Spanish-language track since “Un Año Sin Lluvia” in 2010.
“This has been something I’ve wanted to do for 10 years, working on a Spanish project, because I’m so, so proud of my heritage, and just genuinely felt like I wanted this to happen,” Gomez told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe on Friday (Jan. 15). “And it happened, and I feel like it’s the perfect timing. Just with all the division in the world, there’s something about Latin music that globally just makes people feel things, you know?”
The Texas-born artist of Mexican descent also discovered she “sings better in Spanish” and it came “very naturally” to her.
“It is something that needed to be precise, and needed to be respected by the audience I’m going to release this for. Of course, I want everyone to enjoy the music, but I am targeting my fan base. I’m targeting my heritage, and I couldn’t be more excited,” she said.
“So it didn’t take me long to really feel the mood of the music. I think Spanish came very naturally to me,” she continued. “So there were obviously moments where there was specific timing, there were cues that were so quick that I had to learn that were challenging, but as far as being able to say, and speak, and roll my Rs, and do all of that, that’s already in me, thank goodness. So it had its moments of being really smooth, and then just I have a few things where I’m kind of speeding rapping Spanish, which is cool.”
During the more than 10-minute-long interview, Gomez also opened up about discovering J Balvin, being named after Selena Quintanilla, growing up with Latin music, and advocating for social justice on social media, to name a few.
