League Insider: Trust Me, The NBA Will Expand
The NBA hasn't had an expansion franchise since 2004 as owens have been reluctant to divide their revenues with more than the existing 29 other teams. But Seattle remains a large market with a wealthy population and a track record of supporting the NBA that hasn't had a franchise since 2007 to make it an obvious expansion candidate. The league is also facing a downturn of revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic with expansion serving as a way for the owners to essentially write themselves a large check.
"Trust me, the league will expand," said a league insider.
The NBA recently took out a league-wide loan of $900 million that was given equally to all 30 teams to assist with their cash flow.
"The NBA has a hole to fill, and if you do two expansion teams, that's $4.5 billion. Divided 30 ways, everyone gets $140 million," said Tim Leiweke. "Ironically, that is a very, very similar number to the losses in 2020-21."
