Brandon Bernard has been executed, 9th U.S. federal execution of 2020
On Thursday night, the government of the United States carried out the ninth federal execution of 2020, the first during a presidential lame-duck period in 130 years.
Federal prisoner Brandon Bernard was executed tonight in Terre Haute, Indiana.
David Begnaud of CBS News: "Brandon Bernard was pronounced dead at 9:27 pm ET after the U.S. Supreme Court denied his stay of execution and after 5 jurors who put him on death row asked that he not be executed because of new evidence presented in the case that was not known at the time of trial."
Michael Tarm of AP reported that #BrandonBernard directed his last words to the family of the couple he killed, speaking with striking calm.
"I'm sorry," Brandon Bernard said before he was executed. "That's the only words that I can say that completely capture how I feel now and how I felt that day."
