Justin Bieber & Shawn Mendes Kick Off 2020 AMAs With ‘Monster’ Performance

Days after releasing their highly anticipated collaboration “Monster,” Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes combined for its debut performance on Sunday night (Nov. 22), two Canadian superstars kicking off the 2020 American Music Awards in show-stopping style to cap off an extended medley of Bieber’s recent singles.

Bieber launched the performance by singing to himself — crooning “Lonely,” his recent team-up with super-producer Benny Blanco, into a mirror as Blanco played piano behind him. As the camera eventually pulled back, Bieber was revealed to be surrounded by mirrors, singing through the heart-wrenching ballad while surrounded by reflections of himself.

The medley continued with the more positive “Holy,” another new Bieber single (this time alongside Chance The Rapper), which the pop superstar handled himself alongside a collection of facemask-clad backup dancers and a large cross hovering above the stage. When the dancers disappeared and Bieber wrapped “Holy,” Mendes arrived, propped up on the edge of a platform with an acoustic guitar and his long hair shagging in his eyes. Mendes and Bieber soon shared the same stage, using “Monster” to reflect on the trappings of fame and concluding with some emotional vocal runs.

“Holy,” “Lonely” and “Monster” are all collaborative Bieber singles released following his album, Changes, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in February. “Holy” and “Lonely” were both top 20 hits on the Hot 100, while “Monster,” his first team-up with Mendes, will appear on the latter’s upcoming album, Wonder.
