It Was Only A Matter Of Time Before The GOP And Fox Had To Divorce Trump - The Election May Be That Moment

While President Donald Trump continues to insist that the 2020 general election is being stolen, Republican (Grand Old Party) leaders and, even Fox News, is not that sure. Indeed, few, if any, Republican Party leaders or right-wing media outlets (except for far-right talk radio shows such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity) like Fox dare claim to espouse the votes are illegitimate or that Democrats are somehow trying to steal the election.

In fact, many GOP leaders are either avoiding reporters or repudiating such claims of illegitimate votes, not wanting to challenge the precious, almost sacred, right of voting and thereby drive more voters away from a shrinking Republican Party and from conservative television news networks.

Time for the GOP to Part with Trump

After President Trump falsely claimed victory in the race early Wednesday morning, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, “that isn’t usual,” adding “the outcome of the presidential election hasn’t yet been determined.” (1) He went on to stress the importance of finishing the (vote) counting and the need for each state to ultimately finish the outcome. The Senator’s apparent move to distance himself from Donald Trump did not include criticizing the president’s comments or lawsuits to stop the vote that have been filed in several key states.

Experts suppose Sen. McConnell may be thinking about “life after President Trump” and the need to work with a Democratic president and House.

Control of the Senate is also hanging in the balance.

Fox’s Divorce Court Televised

Many also were surprised at how quickly Fox called the state of Arizona for Democratic challenger Joe Biden. The eleven electoral votes gave him 264 votes compared to the president’s 214. Some within the news organization and viewers thought Fox’s positive coverage of Joe Biden was premature. In his first on-air interview, the president railed against Fox. When the president’s press secretary Kayleigh McEnany came on the show to defend stopping the vote, hosts fact-checked her saying:

“We always have had provisional ballots and military ballots,” and that that decision had been left to the states to decide. (2)

Meanwhile, Trump protesters flocked to the Phoenix elections office to not only chant “Stop the Vote!” but “Fox News Sucks!” (3)

Reaching New Voters and Markets to Survive

Like Sen. McConnell, Fox News may be sensing a major shift taking place in demographics and reaching out for new voters and markets. The electorate is rapidly moving away from conservatism to a more modern form of governing. The racial makeup of nonwhites will soon outpace whites by the year 2050. Also, exit polls showed that the three major concerns voters had when they cast their ballots were the coronavirus pandemic, healthcare, and the economy-in that order. (4)

After supporting and enabling the president’s botched response towards the virus and unfulfilled healthcare plan, Sen. McConnell and Fox may be distancing themselves from the president’s gross negligence, hoping the public will be forgetful or at least forgiving.

Divorce Is Never Easy

Divorce is never easy. In fact, many counselors view it worse than death.

Divorce or separation can easily turn ugly, especially with someone like Donald Trump who is a malignant narcissist.

Already, and feeling disempowered, the president is planning his revenge by messaging to some 70 million voters that still managed to vote for him. In addition to manipulating his base to go after Republicans leaders and a news outlet that did not seem loyal enough, he is already planning to run in 2024 on a platform that could become a Third Political Party in opposition to the GOP. (5) Another thing Donald Trump plans to do is start up a media empire-win or lose, which may be the reason Fox has been so compliant and a mouthpiece for the president. (6)

A Complete Break

Not surprisingly, federal judges and the Supreme Court may do the same: divorce Donald Trump. Given the president’s toxic language and threats how the Supreme Court must vote for him, since he appointed three of the 9 justices, that is, if his lawsuits to stop the vote make it that far, he may soon find himself an eligible but highly shunned bachelor when it comes to political life.

This includes lawsuits over tax evasion and money laundering and hundreds of millions of dollars in outstanding loans to banks that will soon be due.

If he does lose the 2020 election, including the tremendous power and authority that comes with the office of the presidency, do not be surprised to see an ugly divorce between the GOP/Fox and Donald Trump but a complete break.
