After a year of locust swarms, widespread alien sightings, and a plague, you can also cross off “unearthing ancient mummies” from your 2020 bingo card. Archaeologists discovered a collection of never-before-seen mummies at a burial site in Egypt. OPEN IT! OPEN IT! OPEN IT!

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the exciting, yet potentially apocalyptic discovery on Thursday with a Facebook video. As many as 13 mummy coffins that have never been opened and believed to have been sealed for more than 2,500 years. Of course there are 13 unopened coffins, as in the number thirteen, the most superstitious and unluckiest number in history.

The mysterious coffins were found in a large burial complex hidden in Saqqara, an ancient burial ground in Egypt, about 20 miles south of Cairo. The necropolis of ancient Memphis features tombs of the kings of the first and second dynasties, as well as what is believed to be the world’s oldest complete stone building complex of its size – the Pyramid of Djoser, also known as Djoser’s Step Pyramid. The 4,700-year-old step pyramid was built in the 27th century B.C. for third-dynasty pharaoh Djoser.

The coffins, which were found 36-feet underground, were reportedly stacked on top of each other. Despite the newly-discovered coffins being over 2,500 years old, the paint on them is still visible and distinct. They are painted blue, gold, white, black, and red.

“[It’s] an indescribable feeling when you witness a new archeological discovery,” Khaled Al-Anani, the minister of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, wrote on Twitter.

So do you think we should crack those babies open? What’s the worst that could happen? It will unleash a plague? That’s old hat at this point.
