Studio Ghibli is now selling Hawaiian shirts and Totoro-themed skateboards
As we wait for the Ghibli Museum to reopen its doors after a five month closure, Studio Ghibli has taken up a new, presumably coronavirus-induced, venture: Hawaiian shirts.
The collection of Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbour Totoro-themed Hawaiian shirts are a part of the studio’s new clothing and accessories store, GBL, which describes itself as an “American casual” brand.
The My Neighbour Totoro shirt comes in green and blue with Totoro’s acorns and the little Susuwatari soot characters dotted across it. The “Memories of Koriko” Kiki’s Delivery Service shirt is peppered with various scenes from the 1989 film, featuring Kiki, Tombo, Jiji the cat, and the city of Koriko.
But that’s not all! GBL (which is short for “Ghibli”) has also dropped a collection of four skateboards, featuring designs inspired by Castle in the Sky’s Robot Warrior, My Neighbor Totoro’s Catbus, and Spirited Away’s No Face.
Back in April, the Ghibli museum set up its own YouTube channel that takes fans on a tour while the museum space remains closed. So far, there’s been 12 videos (and presumably more to come) – have a look here. The studio has also released the stills from its upcoming film, Aya and the Witch, which is slated for release later this year.
More good news: though construction briefly paused due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Ghibli theme park is still on track for its 2022 opening!
