Start Buying Masks For Every Season Because Virus Experts Claim We’ll Be Wearing Them For ‘Several Years’

I wrote a recurring feature for this website for a considerable period called Steal This Look. The column focused on putting together outfits for different occasions. If the column were still running, and new reports are true, I’d have to include a matching mask for every ensemble.
Health experts at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security seem confident in their forecast that Americans won’t be able to go maskless in public any time soon. Well, the Americans who are wearing a face covering, and not the morons attacking mask displays at Target, spitting on store counters over mask policies, or losing their shit at Trader Joe’s.
Johns Hopkins practices virus simulations – which sounds awful – as part of a preparedness protocol. The goal of these simulations is to “offer public health experts and policymakers a blueprint of what to do in a pandemic.” I guess no one was listening to the Hopkins crew last year because the country was in no way prepared for the coronavirus.
One of the simulations took place in October 2019. Eric Toner, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, and a team of researchers launched a coronavirus pandemic simulation in New York.
The team ran through various scenarios regarding how the government, businesses, and residents would hypothetically react to the threat.
The biggest takeaway from the simulations: Masks are crucial to slowing down the virus.
This facts should not be surprising news to anyone, and if this point is surprising, you’re probably part of the problem.
Toner and his crew agreed that until there’s a vaccine, masks are the only way to win.
“I think that mask wearing and some degree of social distancing, we will be living with — hopefully living with happily — for several years,” he said. “It’s actually pretty straightforward. If we cover our faces, and both you and anyone you’re interacting with are wearing a mask, the risk of transmission goes way down.”
As of this morning, the US has 2.99M confirmed cases of Covid-19, with over 901K thousand recovered with over 132K deaths.
On CNET’s “Hacking the Apocalypse” series, Toner seemed hopeful that people would wise up on wearing masks.
“They will get over it,” he says. “It’s just a question of how many people get sick and die before they get over it.”
Hopefully, millions wise up sooner rather than later, for the benefit of everyone. Also, Covid-19 parties are NOT HELPING.
