Paul Mescal and Sally Rooney feature among Emmy nominees for Normal People
The TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People has earned multiple nominations for the 2020 Emmy Awards, announced via a virtual ceremony July 28. Paul Mescal, for one, is nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series category, for his portrayal of the much-adored, chain-wearing Connell Waldron.
Sally Rooney herself has also been nominated, alongside collaborator Alice Birch, for the show’s writing, while Lenny Abrahamson has earned a nod for outstanding directing.
Normal People itself, however, missed out on a nomination in the Outstanding Limited Series category, occupied by Little Fires Everywhere, Mrs. America, Unbelievable, Unorthodox, and Watchmen.
Other recently-revealed nominees include Pose actor Billy Porter – who, at the 2019 ceremony, became the first openly gay black man to win an award for outstanding lead actor, also for his role in Pose – as well as Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Euphoria’s Zendaya.
Laura Dern, Laverne Cox, Issa Rae, and Black Mirror’s Andrew Scott, otherwise known as Fleabag’s Hot Priest, are also in the running for awards. (For a one-off Andrew Scott/Paul Mescal crossover, look no further than last month’s Irish Comic Relief.)
The eventual Emmy winners will be announced – at another yet virtual event – on September 21.
