Hey! Say! JUMP’s “Last Mermaid…” blasts in at No. 1 on this week’s Billboard Japan Hot 100, dated June 29 to July 5, extending the streak of Johnny’s boy bands leading the song chart.
The title song of the eight-member group’s 27th single leads physical sales and look-ups, while also faring relatively well in radio airplay (No. 19) and Twitter mentions (No. 10).
With 212,003 copies sold in its first week, the single is on par with its predecessor, “I am / Muah Muah” from March (215,692 copies), indicating that the dedicated support from the group’s solid fanbase has pushed the group to the top of the chart once again.
NiziU — the new Japanese girl group formed through the Nizi Project auditions by Sony Music and South Korea’s JYP Entertainment — released its “pre-debut” four-track digital mini-album called Make you happy on June 30. All four songs performed well in downloads and streaming, breaking into the top 20 on the Japan Hot 100.
The title song led streaming (11,584,293 streams) and video views (18,882,658 views), hit No. 2 for downloads (25,439 units) and Twitter, and came in at No. 5 for radio airplay, debuting at No. 2 on the Japan Hot 100.
Had the four-song set been marketed as a “single,” the figures show that the overall point total would have overtaken the established Johnny’s boy band’s latest release to give the young group — the average age of the nine members is 16.8 — its first Billboard Japan Hot 100 No. 1. But as it stands, Make you happy is calculated as a mini-album, and as such, leads the Hot Albums tally for this week.
YOASOBI’s “Yoru ni kakeru” and Eito’s “Kousui” have each been pushed down a notch to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, but both are still going strong in downloads, streaming and video.
In particular, the music videos for both tunes have exceeded 10 million views this week — the former marked 18,829,193 views and the latter, 11,049,601 views — meaning the top three songs for video are on another level in terms of weekly views. Notably, “Yoru ni kakeru” has exceeded 10 million views for seven consecutive weeks from the week dated May 18, and continues to maintain enough momentum to lead the song chart again.
The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, radio airplay, Twitter mentions, YouTube and GYAO! video views, Gracenote look-ups, audio streams from Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music, AWA, Google Play Music, KKBOX, LINE MUSIC, Rakuten Music, RecMusic provided by Gfk Japan, dHits, Uta Pass and Spotify, plus karaoke data from Daiichikosho and XING.
