Biig Piig, “Don’t Turn Around”
Recent Columbia Records signee Biig Piig (born Jess Smyth) hails from London, and performs in both English and Spanish. On “Don’t Turn Around,” which she calls “a post-breakup, pre-glow-up tune,” Smyth melds dreamy production with smoky vocals. Perfect for those late summer nights.
Oliver Tree, Blink-182, “Let Me Down”
Oliver Tree x Blink-182 was bound to happen eventually, and their re-work of the bowl cut-toting artist’s “Let Me Down” hits like a cold water balloon to the face on a scorching summer day. “Let Me Down” appears on Oliver’s fun debut album Ugly is Beautiful as a solo track, but this collab is just that much more appealing.
Fly By Midnight, Clara Mae, “Lost Without You”
L.A. indie-pop duo Fly By Midnight have recruited Swedish singer-songwriter for a perfectly lovely collaboration about wanting to restart a failed relationship. Side note: the accompanying desert-themed music video sees Fly By Midnight’s Justin Bryte rocking a Norman F–king Rockwell! T-shirt, which is simply good taste.
Mazie, “I Think I Wanna Be Alone”
Singer-songwriter Mazie (born Grace Christian) is classically trained in opera and jazz and has a knack for everything from neo-soul to bedroom pop. A jaunty potion of whistles, horns, keys and a kazoo effect, the only downside of “I Think I Wanna Be Alone” is that at a minute and 43 seconds long, it’s over too soon.
SOMI, “What You Waiting For”
Continuing in the grand tradition of iconic “What You Waiting For” songs, K-pop singer-songwriter SOMI’s bilingual banger mixes effervescent Europop with some oddball ornamentation that brings Gotye-core instruments to the dancefloor.
Kylie Minogue, “Say Something”
Glory be: Kylie Minogue is returning to the club with the appropriately titled Disco (Nov. 6). Lead single “Say Something” finds her crooning a gorgeous, limber plea for dancefloor unity over a synth gurgle that sounds like a distant cousin to Queen’s “Radio Ga Ga.” It feels like it’s been “light years” since Minogue dipped into disco, and we couldn’t be more ready.
Liza Anne, “I Shouldn’t Ghost My Therapist”
For those who wish Haim’s folk-inflected rock had more nervous energy than California cool, Liza Anne is here for you with the jumpy, jangly indie pop of “I Shouldn’t Ghost My Therapist,” which is a clear contender for Best Song Title of 2020.
Little Mix, “Holiday”
Mixers catapulted the girl group’s latest single to the top of Billboard’s most recent new music poll, and it’s not hard to see why: “Holiday” is a perfect upbeat summer bop, bubbly enough to inject a little energy into your day without pushing things too hard when the sun is beating down. Little Mix’s lowkey winning streak continues.
070 Shake, “Guilty Conscience (Tame Impala Remix)”
It’s hard to imagine telling someone to make an ambient song “more ambient,” but comparing the original version of singer-rapper 070 Shake’s Modus Vivendi track “Guilty Conscience” to this Tame Impala remix proves that indeed such a proposition is not only possible, but highly profitable in the vibing-out department.
