Watch ‘AGT’ Hopeful Cristina Rae Earn a Golden Buzzer With Encore of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Gimme Shelter’

Aspiring singer Cristina Rae blew the roof off America’s Got Talent on Tuesday (June 9) with her powerful voice and equally moving backstory.
Taking the stage, the Nashville-based singer, dancer and actor explained what brought her to the feel-good reality TV competition this season. “I need this to change my life,” she said while holding her young son Jeremiah. “As you can see, I’m a single mom and I was living in my vehicle while pregnant…I was, before I gave birth to my son. This will change my life by putting us in a home — my own home, not just in family situations. I want him to have his own room; I want us to live in our own home, not a house.”
Sending Jeremiah backstage with host Terry Crews, Rae launched into a passionate performance of Phil Collins’ classic 1981 debut single, “In the Air Tonight.” However, judge Simon Cowell asked her to sing a second song before making a decision, and the unexpected encore moment was where the magic happened.
Rae then delivered a searing rendition of The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” by turning the 1971 single’s lyrics personal: “I see the storm is threat’ning/ Our very lives today/ If we don’t get no shelter/ We’re gonna fade away/ War, children, it’s just a shot away/ It’s just a shot away/ War, children, it’s just a shot away/ It’s just a shot away,” she wailed on the track’s opening verse and chorus.
While Cowell described her voice “insanely good,” fellow judge Heidi Klum went a step further, calling the singer “absolutely out of this world” before pressing her illustrious Golden Buzzer and sending Rae straight to the live shows.
