Gratification Behavior Episode

UPDATE: JUNE 2014 Elsie will be 4 years old in August, and she has completely outgrown this. It has been almost a year since she last (noticeably) did this, and I feel comfortable saying that she does not do this anymore. These episodes started when Elsie was 5-6 months old. We went through the whole gambit of testing (EEGs, EKGs, etc) and were given a generic diagnosis of \"Benign Baby Movement\" (meaning, whatever, it\'s disturbing, but it\'s something your baby just does, we don\'t know why). These episodes continued, occurring only when Elsie was seated upright, so often in the high chair, the car seat, the swing. Considering they appeared to be seizures, we were freaked, even after the doctors and specialists told us that it was just something she did, and they couldn\'t tell us why. The episodes started usually with the arm twitch, and evolved into a dead gaze, often accompanied by rocking and grunting. We could always \"snap\" her out of the episodes, either by getting her attention, or picking her up. We worried about autism or some sort of related disorder, because nothing abnormal showed up on any of her medical tests. Elsie continues to have these episodes and she is now 19 months old. After so many months of constantly wondering and worrying about her seizure-like episodes, I spent some time on the internet and found an article in some medical journal about Gratification Behavior in infants, toddlers and children. After reading the article, I had our diagnosis - Gratification Behavior (aka infantile masturbation). An article can be found here: http://pediatrics.aappu...
