Tripoli forces advance on Hafter's stronghold in west Libya

(18 Apr 2020) Forces loyal to the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) launched a military operation on Saturday, to seize control of Tarhuna city, the main western stronghold of Marshal Khalifa Haftar and his self-styled the Libyan National Army (LNA). GNA forces confirmed that they had killed and captured armed men and destroyed military vehicles, while forces of the LNA said they thwarted the attack. One of the fighters affiliated to the GNA, Ibrahim Al-Shuwaihdi, stationed in the Shredat area, north east of Tarhuna, confirmed that they control several positions that belonged to the LNA, and they have also destroyed military vehicles and looted some cars. The spokesperson for the GNA forces, Colonel Muhammad Qanunu, had announced that their forces had killed eight Libyan National Army (LNA) soldiers and captured others during their progress in the vicinity of the city of Tarhuna, approximately 80 kilometres (50 miles) southeast of Tripoli, as part of the \"Peace Storm\" operation. The recently launched operation by the GNA aims to take control of cities and regions which are under control of the LNA. Qanunu said that progress towards the city of Tarhuna is taking place according to a military plan drawn up by the Peace Storm Operations Room and added that the air force of the GNA bombed sites inside the city. However, Khaled al-Mahjoub, a spokesman for the LNA, said that their forces thwarted the attack of the GNA forces in the Souq al-Jumma (Friday Market area) and Shredat area in Tarhuna, and captured 25 members of the attacking forces.
