Stevie Wonder Pays Tribute to Bill Withers With ‘Lean on Me’ Cover During ‘One World’ Concert

Stevie Wonder honored his late friend Bill Withers during the One World: Together at Home concert on Sunday (April 18). Withers died from heart complications on March 30 at age 81.
The legendary Wonder, sitting at his home piano, told viewers: “During hardships like this, we have to lean on each other for help. My friend, the late Bill Withers, has the perfect song for that, and I want us to remember him tonight.”
He then performed one of Withers’ most beloved classics, “Lean on Me.” The popular tune about friendship came from the late artist’s 1972 sophomore album Still Bill, his first No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Partway through “Lean on Me,” Wonder transitioned to his own timely ballad “Love’s in Need of Love Today.” (PJ Morton performed a cover of the song on April 7 during Billboard’s Live At-Home series.)
The One World: Together at Home concert, which aired on multiple networks and streaming services, was curated by Lady Gaga to raise funds for the World Health Organization and Global Citizen in an effort to help battle the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. The event has raised $50 million to date.
