Peter Hook Scores First Chart Hit as a Soloist on Gorillaz’s ‘Aries’

Peter Hook, long known for his work in iconic alt/dance band New Order, appears on a Billboard chart for the first time under his own name, as Gorillaz’s “Aries,” on which he’s featured with Georgia, debuts on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs list dated April 25.
“Aries” bows at No. 13, having drawn 1.6 million U.S. streams and sold 2,000 downloads in the tracking week ending April 16, its first full week of availability, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.
The track also enters Rock Digital Song Sales at No. 10.
Although “Aries” marks Hook’s first appearance on a ranking as a solo artist, his Billboard chart legacy is extensive. The bassist’s original band, Joy Division, peaked at No. 42 on Dance Club Songs in October 1980, marking the group’s only chart appearance as an active group, shortly after the death of frontman Ian Curtis that May.
Hook, Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris then formed New Order, which has since landed nine entries on the Billboard 200 between 1985 and 2015, paced by the No. 11-peaking Republic in May 1993.
The group has also sent six singles onto the Billboard Hot 100, led by “Regret” (No. 28, July 1993), which also topped Alternative Songs and Dance Club Songs.
In addition to his work with Joy Division and New Order, Hook scored an Alternative Songs hit in 1997, the No. 24-peaking “What Do You Want From Me?,” as a member of side project Monaco.
“Aries” follows “Momentary Bliss” and “Desole” as the latest new song from Gorillaz, who have released three Song Machine EPs so far in 2020.
