Miley Cyrus Takes on Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’ on ‘Saturday Night Live’

Saturday Night Live returned on April 25 with surprise musical guest Miley Cyrus for it’s second at-home episode since the coronavirus outbreak. Cyrus, who was not announced ahead of the show or during the opening credits, performed Pink Floyd’s classic “Wish You Were Here” with producer Andrew Watt on acoustic guitar.
The singer’s stripped-down version of the title track from Pink Floyd’s 1975 album Wish You Were Here felt aching as she performed by a fire pit that cast a red glow on the singer and guitarist, who sat away from Cyrus to maintain social distancing. The lyrics also seemed fitting for the current situation: “How I wish, how I wish you were here/ We’re just two lost souls/ Swimming in a fish bowl/ Year after year.”
Watt kept things simple on the guitar, letting Cyrus’ voice shine. The guitarist had shared in March that he tested positive for COVID-19, urging fans at the time to take the pandemic seriously. The 29-year-old explained on Instagram that the virus left him feeling as if he had been “hit by a bus,” and had to repeatedly beg for a test before finally getting one from a private doctor. He noted of the virus, “I can’t stress this enough… This is not a joke.”
During SNL’s first at-home episode, Chris Martin, like Cyrus, performed a cover of a classic rock song, taking on Bob Dylan’s “Shelter From the Storm.” Cyrus has taken on Pink Floyd before, performing the band’s iconic “Comfortably Numb” during the iHeartRadio Music Festival in September 2019.
