Verve Forecast Signs Kentucky Singer-Songwriter S.G. Goodman: Exclusive

Verve Forecast has signed Western Kentucky singer-songwriter S.G. Goodman to a recording contract, Billboard can exclusively announce. The news accompanies her debut song and music video, “The Way I Talk,” out today (March 4).

Jamie Krents, executive vp for Verve, Verve Forecast and Impulse!, says that he was “immediately determined” to sign S.G. Goodman after first hearing her rootsy sound and raw, honest lyricism. Goodman has been signed to Verve Forecast under-wraps since November 2019.

“She represents everything that this label is about: artistic integrity, a unique point of view, and incredible songwriting,” Krents says. “I flew down to Kentucky to see her perform and, the more time I spent with her, the more certain I was that she is a timeless talent.”

Goodman was raised in Western Kentucky on the Mississippi River Delta, in a family of church-going row crop farmers. She explores the plight of the rural working class in “The Way I Talk,” which is riddled with biblical references and Southern imagery.

She’ll continue to explore the complexities of her upbringing on her upcoming debut album, Old Time Feeling, out May 29, which includes songs about mental health, living with OCD, her identity as a gay woman and how she has reconciled her social and political views with those of her hometown community.

The project was recorded over just seven days at Louisville’s iconic La La Land Studio and co-produced by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, who adds in a press release, “I think she could play an important role in the healing we need to see happen right now. She’s living proof that we can be whoever we want to be, no matter where we come from.”

Goodman joins a Verve roster that includes Mandy Moore, T Bone Burnett and 2020 Grammys best new artist nominee Tank and the Bangas. Founded in 1964 as Verve Folkways and rebranded to Verve Forecast a few years later, the label was revived in the 2000s to house a new wave of jazz and roots-oriented artists.

“What a pleasure to team up with Verve Forecast for the release of my debut album, Old Time Feeling,” Goodman adds. “I’ve entered a family of music lovers and join a rich history of timeless artists. Hopefully, I’ll fit in just fine.”

Ahead of the album, she’ll open for John Moreland on his headline tour throughout March and April, as well as support for Nada Surf and Son Volt, and will make her SXSW festival debut on March 18 at St. David’s Historic Sanctuary.
