Another Ex-Lions Player Totally Bashes HC Matt Patricia By Calling Him The ‘Worst Person’ He’s Encountered In Football

Matt Patricia is getting bashed from pretty much everyone these days. The Detroit Lions head coach — who has seemingly tried to emulate the behavior of his mentor, Bill Belichick, since taking over the club — doesn’t seem like he’s got a high Q rating, according to some of the guys who used to be in his locker room. And, considering Patricia’s a paltry 9-22-1 in his two seasons leading the Lions, a few of his now former players are suggesting that things are even worse than his losing record would indicate.
Just the other day, we saw recently traded Darius Slay absolutely rip Matt Patricia over some of the insults the head coach had to say to the cornerback — one of which was to stop sucking a WR’s ‘private’ during a 2018 team meeting. While Slay said that was the beginning of the end between the relationship between the two (which is understood), another ex-Lions player, Garrett Hudson, is echoing some of the same things Slay said about the head coach.
In a series of tweets following the Slay revelation, Hudson tore Patricia apart, too, not only describing a scene in which the head coach laid into running back Kerryon Johnson over a bizarre factoid about the Lions stadium, but also adding that Patricia was the “worst person” he’s ever encountered during his time playing football. That’s quite the statement, so take a look at Hudson’s tweets below.
Matt Patricia is literally the worst person I’ve encountered in my entire football career. I was excited when the lions cut me. It was that bad

He cussed out Keryon Johnson in front of the whole team because he didn’t know what year ford field was constructed

Let me give more detail on this. It was funny as hell and Keryon didn’t seem affected by it. Some guys don’t mind his personality and way of doing things. Myself, and a lot of other guys would’ve liked it different but it’s his team, his rules.

Those are some pretty harsh words from Hudson, and, if true, tends to fit a theme about Matt Patricia — that he’s a Grade A asshole to lots of his players.
That said, Hudson did try to clear up some of his comments the day after his initial tweets, saying that Patricia seemed like a “nice guy” outside of meetings, and that maybe the head coach had “changed” in the two years since he played for the Lions. But, c’mon, this has to be a case of Garrett Hudson just saving face.
Let me add some more context since this is blowing up
1) He seemed like a nice guy outside meeting and I know a few guys liked him a lot
2) I was only there for rookie mini camp, so he probably treats the vets with more respect
3) this was 2 years ago. He could have changed— Garrett Hudson (@G_Hudson46) March 20, 2020
Regardless of how players feel about Matt Patricia, there’s one thing that’s obvious: If the Lions continue to finish in last place in the NFC North, as has been the case in his two seasons on the job, there won’t be many guys talking shit about his coaching style and personality much longer — because ol’ dude will be canned and looking for work. Wonder if the head coach will take all this criticism from players to try and ease up a little bit or not?
