A newly-discovered insect has been named after Lady Gaga

#DmtDaily

A newly-discovered genus and species of insect has been named after Lady Gaga, which is… a compliment, of sorts? Specifically, the new discovery is a kind of treehopper, and it will be known from now on as Kaikaia gaga.

Why name a new species of treehopper after Lady Gaga, though? Well, by all accounts the insects are pretty wild looking. “If there is going to be a Lady Gaga bug, it’s going to be a treehopper,” Brendan Morris, the University of Illinois grad student that made the discovery, tells the university’s News Bureau.

“Because they’ve got these crazy horns, they have this wacky fashion sense about them. They’re unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.”

The bug was one of around 1000 specimens that Morris borrowed as part of his research, but he’s been unable to extract DNA. Apparently, he’s now planning to travel to Nicaragua, hoping to find a Kaikaia gaga in the wild.

Lady Gaga is yet to make a public comment on the new insect, but the singer has been busy releasing a video for “Stupid Love”, working on her new album, Chromatica, and curating an all-female playlist for International Women’s Day.

Back in November last year, Greta Thunberg also received the honour of having a bug named after her, though in her case it was a tiny, blind, and wingless beetle, inspired by her famous quote: “you are never too small to make a difference.”
