The act's fourth LP drops on Friday.

BTS is set to drop their highly anticipated Map of the Soul: 7 album later this week, and the lead-up to its release has been action-packed. With three new songs shared prior to its arrival and buzz around collaborations, plus immense pre-order sales, Map of the Soul: 7 is set to be the historic septet’s biggest album yet.

As we wait for the new album to arrive on Friday, here’s what we know so far.

It’s a follow-up to last year’s Map of the Soul: Persona

Throughout their career, BTS have regularly released album series, and Map of the Soul: 7 is the second part of one that draws on Jungian psychoanalytic thought for inspiration. Persona’s “Intro: Persona” and 7’s “Interlude: Shadow” and “Outro: Ego” each reflect different elements of the Map of the Soul as laid out in a book by Jungian psychoanalyst Murray Stein that the act has referenced. The pair of albums' songs tie into the discovery of self that BTS uses its music to explore and relay to listeners by drawing on this inspiration, as well as other facets of their lives and careers. A compilation, often described as a repackaged album in the South Korean music market, though it is not being marketed as one, Map of the Soul: 7 features several Persona tracks.

Three new tracks have already been released

BTS shared one single, “Black Swan,” through an artistic music video featuring a contemporary art performance and also shared “Interlude: Shadow” and “Outro: Ego” through videos featuring Suga and J-Hope, respectively, performing the solo tracks.

There will be 20 tracks total

The LP kicks off with five songs from last year's Persona, include the single "Boy With Luv," featuring Halsey, and then leads into Suga's solo "Interlude: Shadow" and "Black Swan," both of which have already been released, before introducing 11 yet-unheard tracks, including the single "ON" prior to the conclusion of "Outro: Ego," J-Hope's recently released solo track. Digital versions of the album, but unfortunately not physical ones, will also feature a finale track in the form of a second version of "ON,” featuring Sia.

Yes, Sia will appear on the single “ON”

The Australian singer-songwriter will join BTS on the single version of the track, which is set to arrive on Friday. An early access snippet of the track will be unveiled 12 hours ahead of the album’s Friday release via TikTok at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday (Feb. 20), making the band the first to formally introduce a single via the short-form video app. When the music video for “ON” arrives Friday at 4 a.m. ET, it's sure to be something brand new and unique from the group: Dubbed the “Kinetic Manifesto Film: Coma Prima,” it is expected to bring BTS to new performance heights.

The album celebrates seven years of BTS & incorporates nods to the act’s career

Map of the Soul: 7 is BTS’ fourth LP, and it comes in the act’s seventh year since their debut on June 13, 2013, with the release of the album 2 Cool 4 Skool. While Persona featured “Boy With Luv” as a parallel track to 2014’s “Boy in Luv,” this album’s “ON” is a mirror of “N.O.” from BTS’ second EP, 2013’s O!RUL8,2? The new album also features “We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal,” which is both a nod to their name -- BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan (방탄소년단) or “Bulletproof Boy Scouts” in Korean -- and ties into their pre-debut and debut-era tracks, “We Are Bulletproof” and “We Are Bulletproof, Pt. 2.” The album overall reflects on the act’s career, bringing things full-circle at a time when BTS has not only achieved historic heights, but also is on the verge of a new era, as the members mature and changes are on the horizon.

Troye Sivan shared that he co-wrote one song

On Feb. 16, Sivan took to Twitter to announce that he co-wrote the track “Louder Than Bombs,” which marks his first time collaborating with BTS.

BTS will promote Map of the Soul: 7 all over television & New York City

On the album release day, BTS will appear on the Today show. They’ll also appear later that day on MTV’s Fresh Outwhile they'll appear in a special NYC subway-oriented Tonight Show episode and The Late Late Show’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment in days that follow. On the 21st, the South Korean group will also appear in Times Square at 7 p.m. at a special Hyundai x BTS event.

Before its release, the album has already broken numerous records

A week after the album went on sale via pre-orders in January, Map of the Soul: 7 exceeded more than 3.42 million sales, and it was recently reported that it has since surpassed 4 million stock orders. Gearing up to be one of the best-selling, if not the best-selling, album of the year worldwide, it’s already made history as the best-selling South Korean album of all time, outselling last year’s Map of the Soul: Persona, which currently holds the title.

Map of the Soul: 7 arrives Friday worldwide

This album is already one of the year’s biggest drops, and it’s not even out yet, so get ready to see BTS dominate once again.
