Eminem Makes Surprise Oscars Appearance to Perform 'Lose Yourself'

The 2020 Oscars took an odd turn Sunday (Feb. 9) evening when Hamilton/A Star Is Born actor Anthony Ramos appeared to introduce… an introduction by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who set up a montage of iconic moments where Hollywood and radio hits have shared the screen over the years.
The video roundup wrapped with a bit of Eminem’s Oscar-winning Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Lose Yourself" from 8 Mile, after which Marshall Mathers himself took the Dolby Theatre stage for a surprise appearance to perform that smash 2002 hit -- which nabbed the 2003 Academy Award for best original song, becoming the first hip-hop song to do so -- for the first time on the Oscars stage.
It was an unannounced performance few saw coming, and you could see the surprise on the star-studded crowd’s faces -- as well as their delight, with many dancing along (although Idina Menzel looked rather confused at the entire thing). Notably, the audio cut out for a few moments -- it’s uncertain whether the Academy censored Rabbit or if Slim was experiencing audio issues.
Following the performance, Eminem tweeted a video of Barbra Streisand announcing his best original song win 17 years ago -- a victory he was not present for. Em wrote, "Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity... Thanks for having me... Sorry it took me 18 years to get here."
Regardless, fingers crossed this means the 2021 Academy Awards will bring out Three 6 Mafia for some Hustle & Flow nostalgia.
