Sudanese troops mass on Eritrean border as dam row deepens

(2 Feb 2018) Sudan has bolstered its troops along the border with neighbouring Eritrea, in the latest escalation among the Nile basin countries over Ethiopia\'s massive dam construction project. The Sudanese army carried out a large-scale mobilisation of its forces in the eastern border area near the city of Kassala on Wednesday, after widespread reports for over a month suggested that Eritrean troops were amassing on their side of the border. Sudan officially closed its border with Eritrea late last month. Ethiopia says the 5 billion US dollars dam is essential for its economic development, noting that the vast majority of its 95 million people lack electricity. The dam\'s hydroelectric plant will generate over 6,400 megawatts, a massive boost to the country\'s current production of 4,000 Megawatts. Differences over the Ethiopian dam, is potentially destabilizing and could add a new and dangerous layer to the turmoil already ravaging the region. Egypt fears the dam in Ethiopia could cut into its share of the river, which provides nearly all its freshwater. Eritrea and Ethiopia have long been bitter rivals and went to war in the late 1990s. Ethiopia denies it is cutting into Egypt\'s share of the Nile, and has accused Eritrea of training rebels to carry out sabotage attacks on the dam. Egypt\'s relations with Sudan, which has lent support to Ethiopia in the Nile dispute, have meanwhile deteriorated.
