Christmas Invades Australia's Charts as Mariah Carey, Michael Buble Rule

It’s a summer like no other in Australia right now, but the country’s sales charts have a cosy, Christmas feel as festive classics by Mariah Carey and Michael Buble take out the top spots.
Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (Columbia/Sony) rules the ARIA Singles Chart for the second year running. Its chart journey in Australia is no less unusual than its 25-year-long ride to the summit in the United States.
“Christmas” was released in 1994 and peaked at No. 2 that year Down Under. Powered by streaming, the tune hit the summit for the first time in 2018, a full 24 years after its release.
The Queen of Christmas also bags No. 8 on the national albums survey this week with Merry Christmas which, like “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” is six-times platinum certified.
With “All I Want For Christmas Is You” ruling the chart, Carey ends the 21-week reign of Tones And I’s “Dance Monkey” (Bad Batch/Sony). Tones’ seven-times certified hit dips to No. 2 in its 29th week on the survey.
Next up, a pair of holiday standards in Wham’s “Last Christmas” (Sony), up 23-3, its equal peak position, and Michael Buble’s “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” (Reprise/Warner), the Canadian singer’s best-performing single which leaps 32-4, a new peak. Brit Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” (Warner U.K.) completes the top 5.
There’s Christmas cheer to be found up and down the singles chart, including John & Yoko and The Plastic Ono Band's “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” (Universal) at a new high of No. 13, new entries from Andy Williams (“It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” at No. 16 via Sony), The Ronettes (“Sleigh Ride” at No. 29 via LEG/Sony) and Paul Kelly’s “How To Make Gravy” (Universal) at No. 45.
According to ARIA, 18 Christmas songs enter the ARIA Top 50 this week.
Over on the ARIA Albums Chart, Michael Buble’s Christmas (Reprise) returns to the summit for the sixth time over different years, a feat no other album has ever achieved. The album is double-diamond certified (one million units plus). Christmas, one of five No. 1s from Buble in these parts, climbs 3-1.
Also this week, Harry Styles’s Fine Line (Columbia/Sony) dips 1-2, Robbie Williams’ The Christmas Present (Columbia/Sony) slips 2-3, Billie Eilish’s debut When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (Interscope/Universal) rises 12-4, and Cold Chisel’s comeback album Blood Moon (Cold Chisel/Universal) drops 4-5.
The highest new entry this week is the soundtrack to the Cats movie (via Polydor/Universal), which lands at No. 32.
