Ed Sheeran Surprises Fans at Japanese Band ONE OK ROCK's Tokyo Show

11/7/2019 by Billboard Japan

After breaking the world record for the "Highest-grossing tour of all time" with his Divide Tour that wrapped up at the end of August, Ed Sheeran announced that he will be taking an 18-month hiatus. Currently, he is enjoying his holiday in Japan.

Sheeran and Japanese rock band ONE OK ROCK have been known to be good friends for some time, and most recently, the band supported the singer-songwriter on his Asia stadium tour in Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. During ONE OK ROCK's Yokohama Arena show on Wednesday (Nov. 6), those in attendance were treated to a very special surprise as Sheeran came out as a special guest.

During the middle of ONE OK ROCK's performance, front-man Taka brought the pop star onstage, causing massive cheering and applause from the audience. Requested by Sheeran himself, he and Taka sung ONE OK ROCK's classic favorite "Wherever you are."

Sheeran added his own flavor by strumming the acoustic guitar to the song and surprised the crowd by flawlessly singing the lyrics in Japanese. And then, Taka shouted "It's time for Ed's song!" as they began playing Sheeran's massive hit "Shape Of You." After grabbing fans with an astonishing performance of each other's songs, they praised each other as Sheeran left the stage with a giant smile.
