The Los Angeles Lakers' NBA Cares event in Shanghai was canceled hours before it was set to begin on Wednesday.

The NBA said that the cancellation was not their call, adding another layer to the controversy stemming from Daryl Morey's tweet supporting Hong Kong protesters.

The Lakers and the Nets are set to play in China on Thursday. Adam Silver is expected to address both teams on Wednesday.
