With Eddie Money’s death Friday (Sept. 13) after a battle with stage 4 esophageal cancer, musicians have taken the day to mourn the late rock star. Rob Zombie and Sammy Hagar took Billboard down memory lane with the “Take Me Home Tonight” singer, remembering his legacy and fight for life.

Metallica played sort of like a special show at the Palladium in L.A. right after they appeared that night on the Grammys with Lady Gaga, and I was up in the VIP section watching Metallica and Eddie Money was up there,” Zombie recalled in a written statement. “And I was just hanging out with him, talking, and he was like super nice and really funny, just like…. He talks in that sort of like your inappropriate uncle at Christmas or something -- ‘Lemme tell ya!’ He had that very distinctive voice. And he was just one bad joke after another after another. He was really super cool.”

Zombie continued to describe Money’s music with a nostalgic shock factor: “He was kind of like one of those guys, ‘Oh yeah, that song! That song, too!’ Like he’s got a lot of hits that were so prevalent on radio.”

For Hagar, the memories of the “Two Tickets to Paradise” singer were bittersweet. “I watched Eddie for the last year struggle with his wonderful close family right there by his side doing anything and everything they could possibly do,” he told Billboard. “He put up a good fight. And his songs will play on forever.”
