Katycats, talk is good. "Small Talk,” even better.
Katy Perry returns with “Small Talk,” her second release proper from 2019. Charlie Puth and Johan Carlsson worked the boards on the new release, the followup to “Never Really Over" which reached No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June (Perry’s collaboration with Zedd on “365” hit No. 86 in March).
Puth co-wrote the perky, post-breakup song, which features a snappy snare and, at the tail end, a handful of “blah blah blahs.”
On it, Perry analyses that strange reality of losing touch with your old soulmate. “Isn’t it weird that you’ve seen me naked/ We had conversations about forever now it’s about the weather okay / I just can’t believe we went from strangers to lovers to strangers in a lifetime / Now just memories we’ve gone from strangers to lovers to strangers," she sings.
The U.S. pop star teased the new release, a few lines of lyrics and its "groovy baby" artwork earlier in the week, and presented it in full Thursday to guests at the Capitol Congress in Los Angeles.
Perry was on hand at the sixth-annual label event to receive a special plaque commemorating 100 million RIAA song certifications. She’s one of only five artists to have topped hit that milestone with their digital singles, according to the trade body, and becomes the first Capitol signing to do so.
