These Cities Have the Worst (and Safest) Drivers

Auto accidents happen, but in some states in the United States, they happen more often. According to a recent report from insurance giant Allstate, some states have far more dangerous roads than others.

Nervous Nellies and pedal-to-the-metal drivers both contribute to motor vehicle accidents in their own way, but you might be surprised by which major urban sprawl has the worst drivers.

According to a comprehensive report produced by Allstate (America's Best Driver’s Report 2019), the worst place for a motorist to be cruising is Baltimore, Maryland. More specifically, it would be best to avoid Interstate 695, at least according to the odds.

The numbers were crunched using two distinct criteria: the average number of years between insurance claims for motorists inhabiting said city, and the number of average hard-braking incidents per every 1,000 miles driven. It turns out that Baltimore is particularly unlucky, with a mere 4.2 years — on average — between insurance claims and a whopping 30.6 hard-braking events for each 1,000 miles traveled.

Rounding out the top of the list is Washington, D.C. – all politics aside, Interstate 295 is apparently a hellacious place to be on four wheels – Route 93 in Boston, Massachusetts, and Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts.

While it’s obvious that car accidents might happen more in densely-populated cities, this isn’t always the case. For instance, one of the safest cities, Brownsville, Texas, had an average of almost 15 years between any type of car accident. And although it might seem that New York City’s reputation for chaos on the road would lead to it being one of the most dangerous places to drive, it really isn’t. In fact, according to the data, the Big Apple has actually been improving over the past 10 years. It should be noted, however, that as far as accidents and unsafe driving go, California was home to six of the 15 most accident-prone cities.

By contrast, Texas – where everything is bigger, except for accident statistics, apparently – saw three of its communities make the Top 10 Safest Places to Drive list. Brownsville took home the top spot at No. 1, while Laredo and McAllen came in at No. 5 and No. 9, respectively. Kansas also saw three entries in the top 10, and Alabama, Colorado, and Florida (yes, Florida!) also made appearances.
